I currently teach a hundred and 44 algebra one honors students and then I have 20 - three algebra students, so I took on six classes this year, which is a lot. I'm just you know navigating the online resources like everyone else's and just trying to make it through the day and of course with. Going crazy, Of course, that's everybody now. I'm kinda curious to hear like you the shit between having a hundred and 44 students and the normal school class setting where they come in different areas versus right now, having to manage that kinda like talk about how that is.
So a bently honest, I preferred to be in the classroom. I feel that it's way easier to navigate a hundred and 44 students because I can be more on top of their work and then doing what they're supposed to be doing. Parents, or had to try to reach out to the kids and it's just the struggle to get to the students by themselves is just kind of a pain cuz they don't know how to check their email or they'd rather play video games and they just kind of ignore the fact that they have this work to be doing so right now I just I wish we were back in the classroom cuz I I students are doing bare minimum right now. Students yeah, of course, and how do they I mean this is based on feedback we got from them, but how do you think they're handling that part of it so far?
Hold on one second, please they're I think handling it as best as I can my who are definitely more involved in trying to do the work still, and I have other students who just do what they have to do to make their parents happy mm hmm right, It's just kind of trying to get through it of course cuz I'm sure they're going to the challenge as well right so then based on that, like in your experience like what is kind of the struggles and challenges that you're facing with. With your students and like what their responses well so for some of my parents, they're still working So when they're gone all day, they don't realize that their student isn't doing their work or they're not actually logging on and doing what they're supposed to be doing. I am I've contacted a few parents and they're like I'll talk to him and then the students still have yet to be doing work.
So I think there's a lot more pressure right now on the parents than there ever has been and it's kind of become. A noticeable that it's it's hard to get some of these students motivated and I can I have two kids that are older. I'm a younger one in elementary elementary one is easy to get her work done. Cuz like you said, you have parents that are working and they're not necessarily able to sit home and do some of that work with them finding ways to at least keep them accountable and like check on their work. Can you talk a little bit about that? I I pushed to try to keep us using that nation during this whole time. I was all excited and then I don't know that we didn't get to use it here and so it's kind of like oh man now what do I do so?
So that's the point. So that's one of the things that I know we've kinda talked about is even now cuz I know you said that even now, it's not necessarily what you guys are using really, but you your students don't know like Hey you can go like look at this topic or look at this section like as you're working through some of the same continent you're working through with them when you're notes right. So when we're. Going through our notes cuz I do zooms twice a week with my students. I was like, Oh, hey, so the best topics in the sections to do go. If you have the time, I'm not allowed to do it, you have to wash them anymore or anything like that. So I just kind of this is the best option for extra resources some use them. Some haven't it all just depends on the student and their parents involvement right and just trying to find ways to Additionally, just kinda keep them accountable for that.

Well, you can watch this topic here these resources that are available to you and I know we try to you know bring home the point that students can do the check your understanding after watching videos cuz those are self guided and they can get an immediate feedback afterwards and to find out what they got right or wrong or they use to test yourselves at the end of Sessions, they can watch the solution. So I think some of those tools are things that students can do by themselves that their parents could try to keep them accountable with and it's kinda self guided so they can work on on their own but I think what you're saying it is obviously still a challenge and so you know that's why we you know we like, for example, we'll talk about like you have the teacher reports, and I know we've talked about that.
It is like you know checking on you can see what videos are watched you can see the results they're taking so finding ways to keep them accountable during these times as well and. Finding additional resources to allow them to use but one of the things I kinda wanted to talk to you about is what are some ways cuz not even during this time, but just in general like ways that we could, I guess improves the word the resources for them to allow parents to become more involved or to feel less intimidated. I don't want to talk about. It's like parents are like well. I haven't done an algebra so long right. No, I don't necessarily know how to do your homework but ways that parents can feel a little bit or family members feel a little bit involved whether it's a sibling or cousin or something like that.
So basically the videos I think maybe I know it's time consuming, but sometimes maybe having a parent, sit down with their child and watch the video it could that could really help motivate the students to wanna watch the video too. If you all like everybody, sat down and watched it together or having some type of worksheet that goes along with the video not just the book, but maybe some my question and answers that they can bring back to school to help keep them accountable and the. Parents make sure you know how the parents sign off cuz every student is different. I've thought the low level students who would never get on to out for a nation at home.
You don't have that accountability at home with parents and so that's their one struggle that some teachers have with the accountability at home and so we can just make a way to keep it. I don't know maybe family oriented or have worksheets that the parents can see ahead of time and have answer keys and like they can feel a little more prepared if they have the answers and so that is one thing that would help. Parents feel more comfortable like okay, I might not have to do it, but I have the answers so I could see what you did and get the answer and maybe check what you did right and like to check yourself.
